Eating With Kids!

Where to Eat With Kids in the Traverse City Area

If you’re eating out with kids around Traverse City, the best spots are usually the ones that do at least one of these well: keep the menu easy, give kids something to look at or do, offer enough variety for adults too, or make it easy to get in and out without turning dinner into a project.

My strongest picks from the current restaurant research are Sleder’s Family Tavern, Minervas, The Little Fleet, Bubba’s, The Filling Station, Apache Trout Grill, The Burrow, and Moomers for dessert. They each work for different kinds of family outings.

Best overall easy family dinner: Sleder’s Family Tavern

Sleder’s is one of the safest family picks in town if you want something that feels very Traverse City and not overly precious. The restaurant describes itself as a place “where friends and family gather,” and its menu includes a dedicated “Just for Kids” section with things like grilled cheese, a kiddie hamburger, hot dog, nachos, cod basket, shrimp basket, and chicken fingers. The bigger draw for kids, though, is the old-school atmosphere and the famous moose tradition, which is exactly the kind of thing that makes dinner feel like an outing instead of just a meal.

This is the place I’d choose for families with grade-school kids, grandparents in town, or anyone who wants a meal that is simple, recognizable, and easy to sell to picky eaters.

Best if you want a huge kid-pleasing menu: Minervas

Traverse City Tourism specifically calls out Minervas as having a huge kids’ menu, and the restaurant’s current menus back that up with kid-focused breakfast options in Traverse City and a broader kids menu on the Minervas site that includes mac and cheese, grilled cheese, pizza, chicken strips, sliders, and mini corn dogs, with sides like fruit, fries, broccoli, or mashed potatoes. That is about as family-safe as it gets.

Minervas is a strong choice when the group includes both adults who want a full sit-down dinner and kids who need familiar options. It works especially well when you want one place that can handle different appetites without forcing everyone into burgers or pizza.

Best if your kids need space and flexibility: The Little Fleet

The Little Fleet is one of the best family options in town when your kids do better in a looser, more casual setting. The restaurant says all ages are welcome, and that most food trucks offer a kid’s menu. It also mentions kid-friendly slushies and lemonades, which makes it feel much more family-usable than the word “bar” might suggest.

This is a particularly good fit for families with kids who struggle sitting through a formal dinner, groups where everyone wants something different, or parents who want a more relaxed evening. The only real caveat is the venue itself recommends that children not be inside the bar after 9 p.m., so this is much better as an earlier outing.

Best downtown burger stop with kids: Bubba’s

Bubba’s is very straightforward about what it is: a laid-back and casual place with food and drinks for the whole family. That alone makes it one of the easier downtown picks when you want something unfussy and central.

This is the kind of place that works when you want a downtown meal without dealing with a more upscale atmosphere. I’d put it in the “easy yes” category for burgers, casual lunch, or dinner with kids who are happiest with recognizable food and a low-pressure setting.

Best pizza night with kids: The Filling Station

The Filling Station is one of the best family-default choices in the area because pizza is usually the easiest universal answer, and their setup is especially convenient for Traverse City family outings. The restaurant highlights its wood-fired flatbread pizzas, says you can build your own, and notes that it is located just off the TART Trail.

This is a smart choice if you want a casual meal after biking, walking, or a day around town, and it works especially well for families with mixed ages because build-your-own pizza usually solves a lot of dinner arguments before they start.

Best if parents want a nicer meal too: Apache Trout Grill

Apache Trout Grill is one of the better answers when the adults want an actual sit-down restaurant but you still need the meal to work for kids. It has a dedicated kids menu for guests 12 and under with more range than the usual basics: hamburger, chicken tenders, perch, shrimp, gnocchi, grilled chicken breast, grilled salmon, junior prime rib, and junior whitefish. It also has novelty drinks like a Cherry Float and blue raspberry lemonade with gummy fish.

Because Apache also offers waterfront dining on Grand Traverse Bay, it makes more sense than many “nice” restaurants for family dinners, visiting relatives, or nights when you want the setting to feel special without leaving the kids with nothing to eat.

Best west-side / M-22 option with a genuinely fun kids menu: The Burrow

The Burrow is a strong family option if you’re on the west side or heading up M-22 and want something a little more current-feeling without losing kid practicality. The restaurant’s menu page includes both a kids menu and a weekend brunch kids menu, and the posted kids menu has more personality than average: sliders, noodles, fish sticks, steak, a rice bowl, and fun drinks like blue lemonade with a gummy shark garnish. The restaurant also says it has a seasonal patio and limited reservations through Resy.

This is a good pick for families who want food that feels a bit better than standard kid-menu fare but still want a restaurant that clearly planned for children.

Best dessert stop with kids: Moomers

Moomers is not just dessert — it is a family outing in itself. Traverse City Tourism highlights it as a kid-friendly stop where families can pick from award-winning ice cream and say hello to the cows, and Moomers’ own site says it serves over 150 flavors with 20+ available daily on the family farm.

If you are building a family evening, Moomers is one of the easiest “everyone leaves happy” stops in the entire area. It is especially good when dinner itself is less exciting and you want the night to end with something memorable.

Quick picks by family situation

For picky eaters: Minervas, Bubba’s, The Filling Station, Sleder’s.

For kids who need movement or a casual setup: The Little Fleet, Moomers.

For a nicer dinner that still works with kids: Apache Trout Grill, The Burrow, Minervas.

For classic Traverse City character: Sleder’s and Moomers.

For pizza / easiest crowd-pleaser: The Filling Station.

My practical shortlist

If I were narrowing this down to the most useful real-world list for families, I’d send people here first:

  • Sleder’s for the classic Traverse City family meal
  • Minervas for the widest kid-safe menu
  • The Little Fleet for casual outdoor flexibility
  • The Filling Station for pizza night
  • Apache Trout Grill for a nicer family dinner
